Eco tyres for a van.

Hi. I'm not sure if I've asked this question before, but can anyone recommend eco tyres that are suitable for a van. The big stumbling block I have found is they have to be 17", be precise 225/55R17.

  • You also missed what load rating they need to be which is important with vans...

    what is an eco tyre?
    do you mean economy price
or economy long-life (i.e. hard as nails)
or eco rolling resistance (i.e. better fuel consumption)
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Van with a low profile 55 tyre?

I presume non standard wheels, Originally 16" with a taller profile but someone
changed to 17's and as mentioned possibly wont have a high enough load rating
    for a commercial vehicle.

  • To answer a few questions-

Eco tyres meaning low rolling resistance.

Vito Sport with standard 17" alloys and tyres currently Continental 225/55 R17 Sportcontact.

I've just thought, all the large people carriers with17" eco tyres have to be rated to over 2.5 tons which would be more than adequate for my Vito.

Well, your current tyres are hardly van tyres, are they? Conti SportContact are passenger car soft performance tyres. Are they at least reinforced?

Check the required load rating first - don't check the current tyres, check the van tyre placard or handbook. I'm quite confident you need reinforced tyres for a van.

One of the latest and best eco tyres at the moment is Pirelli P7 Cinturato, available in 225/55R17 101W XL and 225/55R17 97Y.

I'm surprised it passes a MOT with those tyres on as they're not a high enough load rating. Your vehicle has a 3 tonne GVW so tyres rated for 2.5t aren't going to be enough.
  • Before we all fall out. The tyres that are on (well sat in the garage as I have winter tyres on at the mo) are the Mercedes fitted standard tyres that came with the Vito from new on factory fitted 17"alloys. I'm not sure of the load rating (its too cold to go out to the garage).

I mentioned the MPV tyres as my van weighs just under 2 ton and never gets loaded up that much. I will also look at what is fitted to the VW Touareg Bluemotion, as that thing can weigh up to 2.9 tonnes.

Whether your van gets loaded much or not is completely irrelevant. The tyre placard lists speed and load rating - they are the minimum legal values, you can go higher if you like. And that is the law (The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, Regulation 25). So before you take it any further you need to check the tyre placard.

    Ok thanks.

So back to the OP, are the Pirellis the only ones out there?

    Goodyear EfficientGrip
    Bridgestone Turanza ER300

Both available in 225/55R 17, just check the speed and load rating.

So not much choice really, but all 3 are really good quality tyres. Check the Auto Bild eco tyre test (link above) for more info.
