Account switching question/help please!

I decided to switch from Santander to the Co-op to benefit from the £200 welcome bonus.
Today I relaised that 2 standing orders were paid from both accounts. One is my rent and the other is to pay a personal loan with First direct.

I called the Co-op and they said Santander (the old bank) is at fault as they should have cancelled all DD/SO.

Apart from the obvious task of contacting the letting agency and FirstDirect, can I demand that Santander sorts it out? The guy from co-op said it was Santander's mistake and by law they would have to refund me the money and fix it themselves.

Since I'm in work I can't go to Santander today and would like to get some info so that when I go to the branch I know my rights.

Thanks everyone and apologies if this is in the wrong section.
