  • Might be possible to Telnet in the command into the router?
Depends if remote telnet access from the internet is enabled on one of the router setting page.

I'm not familar with different make of routers so cannot add anymore
In particular whether it is possible merely to switch the Wifi on and off without having to fully log into the router with the password - assuming the user has changed it from the default.
(on mine you have to fully log in to even view the stats let alone change the wifi status!)

They have given me a http gateway address where in theory I can change all the settings, however some of it is restricted such as the ability to turn the wireless off, but not on.

then if I press on the O2 Wireless Box icon it provides some of the specs as well as the serial number which I have not included here as that is part of the security

    spacer.gifProduct Name TG585 v7spacer.gif
    spacer.gifSoftware Release:8.2.7.7

This router is free with O2 as is their telephone helpline (0800) they answer quickly in a Northern Irish accent which is where they must be based.

That is one of several standard router addresses. Everyone that has the same make/model router will have the same address to access their router's settings.
How do I add a signature?
  • Oh dear did you then log in to the router using the user name and password ,that the gave you when you got it, you can then switch on or off the wireless to your hearts content. Plus the router should be set up not to allow access from the WAN as opposed to the LAN, ergo they should not be able to do anything remotely.

    Manual for your router

Note: O2 may have customised the firmware, so the Gateway Graphical User Interface (GUI) pages may look different.

Not wishing to confuse the OP, just quoting what it says in the manual.
Browse to http://dsldevice.lan or to the IP address of your Thomson Gateway (by default: 192.168.1.254).

The only way that could have done this is by installing remote access software ~(such as LogmeIn) onto your PC, and then logging into the router interface from your web browser..
They cannot log directly into the router and alter any settings.
You presumably have the standard Thomson TG585 router?

You can remotely access some routers and access the setup menu, most Netgear's for example have a remote administration option that when enabled allows remote access and complete control of the modem router LINK. You have to enable this feature and it's username/password protected and know the IP address (or setup a DynDNS account) but I don't suppose an ISP has trouble finding out your IP address. Therefore it is quite possible that a custom version of adsl modem could allow an ISP to remotely configure the modem router.

I have used this feature at work where we have a number of remote PC's in distant locations on ADSL lines - and sometimes have had to reboot the router if it plays up stopping us from using LogMein to access the router via the PC as you'd normally do.

Which of course assumes that the OP installed the crapware cd  Rather than just plugging the router in and away you go, especially if using ethernet cable, too many ISPs send out their bloatware and set up things like dsldevice.lan and then when their(the users) cannot get to their IP TVs/IP enabled various other devices when there is a domain suffix.

OP if you don't want to use wireless then you can (and should) turn WiFi off, in the settings as someone else has said there should be a tick box saying something along the lines of 'enable wireless' if that tick box is ticked then you have wifi if you don't want WiFi then untick that box and save

if you do want to use WiFi or want to leave WiFi turned on then you should change the security to WPA2 (or if you can't select WPA2 then select WPA) and don't use WEP as there is no reason to ever use WEP in this day and age.
