Benefits

My husband who is nearly 60 applied for benefits, but was told that he would not be able to claim any, reason being is that i am at work full time, don't earn a lot of money, the only way he will get any benefits if i pack up work, he asked about his stamp being paid and said he would not get it paid as he was self employed, which has been finalised and closed by his accountant , all taxes paid, i find this very unfair that he has paid his tax, insurance and yet he can not claim anything, makes me feel like packing up work and claiming every benefit going, any one else had this problem with benefits.

When did he cease being self employed. Did he pay 2 lots of NI whilst he was self employed.

Is he looking for a job. What benefits did he claim for.

If you leave your job without a good cause, you will be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks if want to claim job seekers allowance.

He should have gone to the job centre when he ceased trading, signed on there and gone onto job seekers allowance (if he was looking for a job of course) and he would have got a credit for his NI.

When you are self employed you pay 2 lots of Stamps, was he doing this.

Something is not quite adding up somewhere. If the DWP say he is not entitled to any benefits he needs a more detailed response.

My OH was self employed and paid a weekly stamp and also an annual stamp with his tax return.

He became too ill, went onto benefits and remained on incapacity benefit till re received his state pension 10 years later.
