QTS only - no PGCE

I applied for a SCITT based Primary Teacher Training course on the basis I would spend 4 days per week at school, and 1 day in the academic hub. At the end of this I would be awarded QTS and a PGCE which could then be used to continue to study for a Masters in Education later.
The provider have contacted me today to invite me to an interview, and just wanted to mention 'one little change' in the course, in that they will now only be offering QTS. No PGCE.
I am fuming. Firstly I would never have applied for this course, and secondly most other institutes did their first round of interviews a month ago, so I feel that I am being backed into a corner. If I were the pessimistic sort I might think the institute have deliberately left the interviews late for this very reason.
They are sending me the information pack today, but on a practical level can someone reassure me? Will I still be elegible for finance/bursary? Am I likely to pay full fees? Might I be better trying for the GTP instead?

saw this article and thought of your post. i don't know much about the details of the changes with PGCEs but it looks like they are all very unclear and subject to change. it won't help your situation, but it does all look very messy for PGCE courses right now. plus it looks like it will only get worse - so it might be best to sort things out for 2012 entry if at all possible, because by 2013, there will be far fewer places.:happyhear0 -

I think the main changes are you won't have any credits for your Masters and some countries won't accept you as a qualified teacher without PGCE. Might not affect you if you don't want to go abroad and you can still do the Masters, will just take a bit longer. I don't think it affects finance but I am not sure. Good luck, I know there is alot of pressure on places for PGCE this year.Sell £1500

I spent three years studying to be a teacher and have a BA (Hons) Initial teacher education with QTS. Are you saying with that degree - specifically in teaching I can't teach in certain places abroad?
If your heart is in teaching then go for it! As long as they can guarantee you have a recognised teaching qualification for the area you want to teach then I don't see any problem!0 -

Apparently this is true - a young teacher at the school I wok at wanted to go and teach in Australia but as he had only done the same as you they wouldn't accept him.0 -

Hi, I have been looking at Australia and USA, just thought they were places teachers might want to go as English speaking. Bit complicated by the fact that different states have their own rules but all the ones I looked at (for Oz and USA) specifically mention B.Ed and PGCE being OK, QTS from SCITT or GTP without PGCE not accepted. No mention of BA so I am guessing that means no but it might not. Not alot of help am I. I suppose the best thing is if you are thinking of going abroad to look at the actual places you want to go and take advice. Good luck, really annoying for you if it spoils your plans.Sell £1500
