iMacs, IMHO, are overpriced items (like most Apple products)

It costs more to build an equivalent Windows desktop to the same spec as the 27" iMac buying parts from Scan etc than it does to buy a 27" iMac. And even then, the Windows desktop doesn't have a thunderbolt port and you're having to use a lower mid-range motherboard.

For £1650 I can have a extremely fast, water-cooled desktop with a 30" screen with far superior components than a 27" iMac that costs Apple less than $1,200 to make inc R&D.
  • Don't bother with a hackintosh.. build yourself a decent PC and partition and use Mac OS.. Everyone's a winner..

There is always a revision of the range within 9-12 months of the last set of models. I suspect the new iPad 3 will appear in the next 4-6 weeks, that'll be their killer product of 2012. Perhaps then the MBPs and iMacs will get the new chips from Intel.

Personally I don't want Lion on mine, as it has some issues with the versions of Creative Studio I use, so wanted Snow Leopard, so we plumped for the most recent Core i5 iMac, which rockets along with my 50MB RAW files in Photoshop.

Be interesting to see which of these top end PCs under 2K have professional monitors which are fully colour balanced for photography... Even my high-end Dell 24" has colour drift, nothing like the almost spot of lab quality colour of my iMac, for colour critical work, unless you are spending 1500 to 2500+ on a pro display alone, then the iMac displays are IMO unbeatable.

Still I use both, horses for courses. :)
