Mum taken to court over son's 'term-time holiday'

  • My husband and I have organised our holidays thus far to coincide with the school holiday dates. But I will have no hesitation in pulling her out if we want to go to Lapland at Christmas.

My daughter's teacher was unable to get to school due to the 'bad' snow several weeks ago, and yet her school (of which all the other members of staff were present) was unable to absorb her into the rest of the classes/system and insisted I took her home. Bearing in mind her school is a large primary school with a parallel Reception class and a Deputy Head with no allocated class to look after! And if I recall the Head used to be a teacher himself and was in the building all day??

I taught in a Junior School for 7 years, and the Head, or indeed any of the other members of staff, would not hesitate to rally round if a teacher was off sick and no supply was available. We just added an extra half dozen pupils to the class and coped! On snowy days, all the children who made it in were registered in the hall, then divided up amongst the staff who, being the total professionals they were, provided them with a sound day's education (as well as a good few snowman-building sessions!).
'My father told me to go for it.
So I went for it. But it had gone.'

After booking a holiday today on the 7th-15th May, I'm gonna have to take a week out of college and my sister will be taking a week out of school (currently in Year 11).

Many will say this is absurd, and yes perhaps it is, but we timed the holiday before the exam period starts and it resides during revision sessions at the school which only last 2 hours each day, rather than missing school.

The reason, we've not been abroad with Mum for six years and she can't afford any other month bar May which threw up some good deals. My sister can revise while lounging as I did in America previously in 2005 with my Dad and I had GCSE's and I don't miss out much at college.

For some who can't afford it, taking term time out is a necceassity to enjoy a family holiday.

It' alright for those people who can afford the extortionate prices in school holidays. I would love to take my children in school holidays but can't affors the prices and I'll be damned if they are gonna miss out on a life and family experience just to stay politically correct. Maybe we should make it illegal for this ridiculous government to impose unfair taxes on us. See how Tony Blair likes being prosecuted...oh it makes my blood boil !!!
