Actually there's a very good reason why she shouldn't. She has a premature baby. Hence the prescription for Nutriprem. In fact, because powdered formula is known not to be sterile and pathogens have been found in unopened cans it's actually recommended that ready made sterile liquid formula is used in preference to powder, especially for premature babies who are more vulnerable than average. And for that matter NO formula is supposed to be made-up in advance.

Perhaps mother's who don't prepare formula properly should be charged for wasting NHS resources if their babies end up in hospital due to gastroenteritis - 5 times more common in bottle fed babies than breast fed, probably because so many people don't take the risks seriously.

I'm sure when LondonDiva said 'make up the formula' she meant following the correct guidelines, which is what all mums should do, not just those with prem babies

    Sorry, I would read

to be exactly as written: as an instruction to make it up and take it with her. LondonDive could have gone on to make a practical suggestion of how she could do it safely at the appropriate time but she didn't - it was just a rant.

and in answer, I had nutriprem 2 in liquid form on prescription for 12 months, never had the powder at all, the hospital prescribed liquid so thats what i was given.

Whilst I am sorry to hear that your baby was early and am pleased that he/she is doing well. I am by no means envious that your milk is free and I do not feel that my post was nasty, I was stating a fact. The NHS is strapped for cash and whilst the milk you have for your baby is a "necessity", ready made formula is a luxery. I really am not jealous nor envious as the milk that nourished my babies was also free.

It is luxury. I think you are jealous:j.
This is a moneysaving website so is it really surprising when people ask how they can get stuff for free?:rotfl:Let us not make this a political debate. If the NHS is strapped for cash they would take it off the tariff and make it unavailable to everyone. I agree it should be off the tariff but until then people are entitled to take the ready made if they can and want to.

OP, you asked a question on a PUBLIC discussion forum so should be unsurprised when, along with the answer you are looking for, some people post their points of view and alternative opinions. They have taken the time to read your post and people can't just read something without having an emotional reaction to what is written.
All that wittering to say - you read a reply and took it to be nasty (and I don't think it was) and opened both barrels yourself ;).

Do you know the retail price of the ready made cartons of prem milk? And roughly how many you would need over the next 6 months? Maybe you could use that information to argue your case?

    Good Luck

I have no problems with other opinions just the rude tone and getting all personal ('The NHS is not there for your convenience'). My baby is nearly 6 months anyway so wont need it for long. As I said, I have been able to get some.

I can understand that the milk might be prescription only, and that the OP might sometimes find ready made cartons to be more convenient. What I am struggling a little with though, is why OP cannot ask her GP to write a private prescription for some ready made formula, and pay herself for a few cartons if the GP won't prescribe it on an NHS script?

..because i did not know about this option. it would have been great if you explained rather than assume i knew about it but did not want to do it. i am ok now.

but what difference does a private presciption make if i can get it over the counter? i genuinely want to know. i am a ittle naive about these things

Whilst nutriprem like other milks needs to be made fresh, why can OP not do what other parents do and take a sterile bottle and a flask of boiling water out with her together with the milk powder, and make it as she needs it? Lots of us who have had to bottlefeed newborn or delicate babies, have found ways to sterilise equipment when travelling, so I don't really understand the "hygiene" comment, and if the worst comes to the worst it is possible to buy prepacked sterile empty bottles from Boots and other chemists, which are one use, so these could be used if OP genuinely will be somewhere where she can't plug in a steriliser or soak her bottles in Milton.

I already have all these. i dont need the carton for the whole trip. thanks

thanks lollysmum. i know, shame a simple question got turned into politics. since i cannot even find it in pharmacies in my area i can assume it is a postcode thing. i am due to move in a bit and will ask my new doctor. if he will give me a bit of the liquid, i will take some. my opponents can then sue me:j

Brownbabygirl your attitude to some the previous posters is disgraceful, eveyone is entitled to their opinion but you seem to be palying the rude/bully card if that opinion dares to be different from yours.

I understand your LO is in need of prescription formula and no one on this thread has begrudged him/her that, where the problem lies is your attitude that you want to take the easy option and there for feel it should be availible to you.

For what it's worth before you accuse me of also been envious of your free milk I certainly am not. I have 3 childrren and never once had to pay for milk, I am very lucky in the sense I have been able to BF all of mine.

I am glad you have some milk availible to buy but please be aware not everything on ebay is genuine and I would think twice about buying prescription anything on ebay.

I apologise. I really did not mean to be rude or be a bully. Really. Some people are just sooooo rude and cannot take it back! As I have said, I am travelling also with sterilizing equipment etc. What is wrong with taking the easy option?
