Charging phone via usb - any secrets?

I bought a usb charger cable for my phone ( LG KE970 ) ( Yes.... old.. ), the charger having gone awol.
When I plug it in nothing happens however. I have a usb > mains adapter and was hoping just to plug it in and see it charging. It doesn;t though.
I also tried via pc.
There is some charge in it just now.
So is there something I need to do to get it to know to charge?

It is likely that the USB is for connecting to a PC only. It is only recently (past couple of years) that it has become common for phones to also charge via the USB port.0

some old ones are are v-usb, they use pin 1+3 for power so wont charge from a normal USB, it fits but does not workHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I believe the KE970 (Shine?) can be charged via USB but failing what has already been suggested above it could also be any of the following: -
You have USB 1.x ports and USB 2.0 ports are required.
Your USB ports may not be pumping enough juice into the phone to charge. If a desktop PC try using a rear port rather than a front port.
You may require the LG Software Suite (or equivalent) usually downloadable from the LG website. Some devices, for instance Blackberry, iPhone, require a driver to be installed before the device is fully recognised. The iPhone, as well as using positive and negative, uses the RX/TX voltages to recognise if the charger being used is a mains (1A) or USB (500mA) and adjust accordingly. The LG may be using a similar process.0 -
The usb connector was sold as a charging one but I guess it may not be...
I assumed by usb ports were all 2.0 but thats a good point - I'll check. Also installing LG driver to see if that makes any difference.
I had hoped to be able to go abroad with the cable and my mains usb adaptor but sounds as though that is unlikely
Thanks for the advice(s)0 -

How about a USB Mains Charger , which you plug your USB into and then plug the charger into the electrical socket...sorry if that's not clear, but these links will explain better!

I found some in a Pound shop a while ago, for ...£1 :rotfl: and they're great, and I use mine for my phone, battery charger, or anything else that I'd had to previously charge via my laptop....and they're much quicker at charging too!
