Insuring two cars

Hello,
I'm buying a new car and keeping the old one for a while. So, I need to have both of them insured.
I just phoned my current insurer to get a quote for the new car and nearly fell off the chair in shock when he told me how much it would cost. He said the reason it's so much is because I can't use my no claims discount on more than one car. Is this correct ?
OH says I should transfer the existing policy to the new car and then insure the old one on a month by month basis until I sell it. Is this a good idea ?
Really confused - I thought this would be easy !
Thanks

Yes its correct, that you can only use your NCD on one car. If you insure two cars full time you might be able to earn two NCDs but you can't drive one car and expect to earn two.
Ring your insurers back and ask if you can make an extension to the policy to cover a 2nd vehicle NOT a second policy. Some insurers will do this, others won't. It's still a bit on the steep side though. We have two cars that are identical, one insured full time at a cost of about £60pm yet if I add the other for a week its £20 for the week. No saving to be made really.
You, I and everyone else have been stitched up by the new Continuous Insurance Enforcement. If you don't like it go and annoy your MP.0 -
Phone up Chris Knott and tell them you want a second car policy. They'll give you a discount equal to the NCB on the main vehicle.0

Is that a standard thing with them ( Chris Knott ) to duplicate NCB?
Sounds good to know.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If there is a named driver on your policy some insurers will allow them to earn their own NCB (but they would have to be the policyholder even though they are not the owner, which is usually okay especially if they are the spouse of the owner. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

You don't get a duplicate NCB, you get a discount applied equal to what it would be with the NCB.
Chris Knott is a broker but they have some good second car policies available. Your average high street company are useless in this respect.0 -
Yes, NCD is only allowed to be applicable on one vehicle, which is frankly ludicrous. You earn the NCD personally (i.e. it doesn't transfer to another person if you sell the car) but it is then applied on a vehicle-specific basis.
The NCD (in theory) proves to insurers that you are a lower-risk driver, so why should you suddenly become a much higher risk if you have a second vehicle (especially since, with two vehicles, the amount of time either is in use will be approximately halved)0
