piston gone on just bought car

friends son bought a car from a private seller (£4000 cash) a week ago and today the piston head has gone on it, friend rang the seller but he basically said 'tough' bought as seen and he had no problem with it as far as he was concerned its now her sons problem. is there anything my friends son can do?

    yes look for a good garage that can fix it

    Right there is no such thing as a piston head - it'll either be a piston or the cylinder head.

    But buying from a private seller you are limited in your options as it is a case of buyer beware.

    son could always pay for a full inspection with a view to proving seller knew of the issue

    As a private sale it is difficult to redress however it is possible to take action depending how the seller advertised the car if indeed it was advertised. Are you able to provide this? The fact that it is not a trade sale does not get the seller off the hook completely. Any ad they have made must be accurate. What car and mileage plus what fuel is it?
