New laptop battery not working

I recently bought a new battery pack for my HP Pavilion dv2000 after I completely ruined the old one by leaving it in while the laptop was plugged into the mains.
The new battery slots in fine and seems to charge up ok, but discharges in about 20 minutes even after several charges.
Have I bought a dud or is it actually a fault with the laptop itself?

What do you mean by ruined old one? Batterys should be able to sleep whilst on mains.
But this battery is it original or 3rd party?0 -

It's easy, over time, to ruin a laptop battery. Either by never letting it cylce (usage and then recharge - i.e leaving it on the mains permanently) or by constantly running it to zero (lithium ion batteries don't enjoy this.
Eventually this will either kill or severely shorten the lifespan of a laptop battery.
If the new battery isn't holding charge it's very likely a fault with the battery itself rather than the laptop.
If it is a 3rd party battery (cheap chinese clone of an original) then this fault is common and part of the risk of using a reasonably priced alternative to the daylight robbery that manufacturers charge.

Mine konked after about 12 months and I hardly ever used it, I think they need to be allowed to regularly discharge.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is.
