it's called "Overscan" it happens all the time with my monitor.

Do you have an Nvidia graphics card?
    check this:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13964.html <-- NOTE the link in the Nvidia article is not longer valid

May be the same for intel and ATI video cards but not sure.

Hi I dont know anything about graphics cards but the screen was fine with his old pc. Its a 32inch tv and he can switch fron tv to pc whenever. Ive tried screen resolutions which works but the width is narrower with waste space either side.

what Version of Windows do you have?
Also look in the program list for anything program folders with "Nvidia" or "ATI"

You have to change the "Overscan" to make the screen slightly smaller on the TV so you can see the whole desktop.

Without knowing the maker of graphics card it might be a bit hit-and-miss with suggestions on how to fix

Hi thanks for replying again. Its windows 7. Its hubbies pc, im on my laptop so i ll have a look tomorrow. Its as though the desktop is too big for the size of the tv even though its a 32inch, i need to get both the same size so all taskbars etc are visible and no wasted screen.

Use some photo edit softwares to make the photo just fit the size for your TV.
You can use photoshop.fireworks or Picasa.

ermmm... i hope that (I'm assuming its due to the time you posted this response) that your under the influence of sleep depravation.

The OP is having problems with the size of the dekstop and how it's being displayed in a TV rather than a monitor and NOT an jpg/png/bmp photo.

It could be your screen resolution is too big for the TV.

Right click on an empty part of your desktop and then click Screen Resolution.

Change the Resolution drop down to something smaller than it currently is. Common resolutions for widescreen are:

    1920x1080 (if it's 1080 HD)
    1366x768
    1280x720

Click Apply to test it out.
Click OK once you find one that works.

Hi Its not a widescreen tv. I ve done that and at the moment its on the smallest one we have . There were 3 options on a sliding scale. This way we can see the icons eg start, internet but it also narrows the view and so we have an ok fit top to bottom and about 26inch wide view but the tv is 32 inches wide so wasting space either side. If you get what i mean :)

This might be a silly question, but have you restarted the computer with it attached to the TV. Sometimes it's the same as monitors when you plug those into a laptop, it sees a new screen, but doesn't actually install it or whatever until a restart, then you find it fits fine (works when you switch back to a monitor too).

It also depends on what resolution your TV can actually go up to on PC. I've got mine on a large TV, but the res is fairly naff on it, however suits me as I have vision problems.
