How many houses did you view?

I viewed about 20.
In terms of selecting houses, I did a search on Rightmove for every house in my target areas up to my budget cap with the minimum number of bedrooms. I removed the houses which weren't suitable - e.g. on a main road, near takeaways, only an ensuite bathroom etc and then scrutinised the houses remaining to decide which ones to view.
I then booked the viewings.
I would arrive 15 minutes before, and check out the parking, litter, any signs of broken glass in the gutter (i.e. car crime), graffiti that sort of stuff. I'd suss out what noise I could hear such as traffic. I'd also give the roof a visual, the guttering, the fascias, check out the neighbours frontage (I was looking at terraces), check the brickwork for water damage.
During the viewing I would make notes (a clipboard might be useful so you can lean on it), and specifically make a note of what the problems / issues were (no double glazing, back boiler, damp etc), and then 'write up' the notes fully in the car afterward.
If I liked them I would drive past in the evening to see what the parking was like then.
It seems like overkill, but it's a lot of money so best to get as much information as possible.Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
