Troubles with two meters

Hello all,
We moved out of a flat last year which for some reason had two meters, each possessing two readings; one for the day and one for the night. Both meters are identical and so it's hard to distinguish between them over the phone. I know which reading corresponds to day/night but this has confused our energy supplier, Southern Electric.

When we moved in we were paying £25 per month on electricity (what we were paying in the previous property) despite me pointing out to SSE that we no longer had gas so our monthly tariff should go up. They said that we can adjust it when we give our 1st reading.

Well over 2 years have past and they have not successfully been able to interpret any of our supplied readings. They always say to me, "oh, that's not right, we'll take a closer look at it and call you back". But they never have.

I really want to get this sorted and feel that because we have not been able to monitor/adapt our consumption we have been using too much (despite being very energy conscious).

I would have preferred to pay more each month but as I say, their inability to receive our readings is a massive hurdle.

Does the 12 month back-billing rule apply here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

each meter has a number, so when supplying readings give the number and reading, it should help to prevent readings being crossed.

Ignore the low and normal on this meter, it is for E7, but in your case you have a separate meter day/normal and night/low.

The meter number in this case is S83E 04360, along bottom of meter, so quote that, usually last two digits are enough, unless of course both meters end in same number.
  • Thanks for the post frugalmacdugal, but unfortunately both serial numbers are the same. Annoying.
  • Hi,

    the full number?

They shouldn't be exactly the same, least you know which is day/night.
  • I know. The concierge just said to me "I think this is the day rate and this is the night rate". Very poor design.
