I have a few of these and it never ceases to amaze me is not that they are popular but that over time the way we wear them changes. I bought a couple of very expensive ones when I had a bit of money in the 1980s and I'll never chuck them.

I'd never wear them tied under my chin (Queen style), but I can remember:
    * Tying them over my hair in the 1970s to do the whole gypsy chic thing
    * Rolling them into a hairband in the 1980s
    * Wearing them New Romantic style in the 1980s (ie triangle facing down the neckline)
    * Wearing then Sloane Ranger style (tied at front) in the 1980s
    * Putting them away for the 1990s
    * Wearing them tied at side of neck in the 2000s.
    * Wearing them tied at back of neck in the 2000s (like a mock polo neck over a high necked top)
    * Using them as a handbag accessory in the 2010s (there's a posh handbag firm that incorporates longer silk scarves into their designs but I can't think what they are called.

  • I was surprised to see my 19yo daughter buying and wearing all manner of these scarves. They look very pretty and trendy

My daughter in law has loads of these in plain colours, doesnt wear then but my two girlie grandchildren have major fun with them.

Blue ones for the sea, yellow and orange for the sand, Orange for the sun on the horizon, dancing and floaty things, they spend hours playing and using their imagination.

Awww fond memories! My dressing up box was full of long silk scarves and they "became" all sorts of things, I distinctly remember a pale pink one with a border of dark pink entwined roses - I used to lie on it and pretend to be Snow White or (my favourite) Sleeping Beauty, waiting to be awakened by true loves kiss - although it was usually my mum shouting up that tea was ready that got me moving lol! It's amazing what the imagination can do.

They are also incredibly warm. Silk is has wonderful thermal properties. Try wearing them just around your neck in the cold weather.
Silk is also good to stop wrinkles - use it to cover a pillowcase to sleep on.
