Advice Installing a New Bathroom

I wish to install a new bathroom but have no idea what it should cost. It is a small bathroom

I have a budget of £2000.00 and just wonder if it is possible to get what I have listed below. The property is only 12 years so I don’t think there will be any plastering/ making good.

· New 3 piece Bathroom suite Budget £500.00 (Corner bath would be nice with shower)
· 4 Bathroom unit to conceal current piping
· 1 large Mirror
· Replace current radiator with wall towel rail
· Tile floor and wall.

Am I being overly optimistic here.

no idea about costs, but would say corner baths, unless really big - are not always practical - you can't stretch out and relax like you would in a 'normal' bath.

Should be possible. We are doing our bathroom at the moment. Our budget for the suite was £700 although we did find that suites in this price bracket looked and felt cheap. The suite we eventually went for was £1,100 (ekkk!) but still hoping to bring the whole project in at around 2K. £900ish left for tiles, small chrome towel rail and tiler labour costs. Are you going to install the bathroom yourself? We plan to install the majority of ours but will probably get a tiler in to do all the tiling.

No, I am not the DIY Type.
I plan to buy the stuff and get a pumber and tiler to do the rest. would a pumber be able to it the kitchen units in.

But it looks like £2000 is not going to be enough.

Where can I find a good bathroom fitter in the SE23 area.

Suite doesn't need to cost the earth. You want to spend your money on decent taps. Cheap taps cheapen a bathroom more than anything else.

Avoid Bathstore/B&Q etc. See if a shop like City Plumbing has a branch with a bathroom showroom near you. We went there for our suite and the value for money compared to Bathstore/B&Q was superb. After having a good feel of lots of suites we got the Laura range by Roca. You can get the loo and basin for about £250. We then get a steel bath (rather than plastic), also by Roca, for about £150. If we'd spent that sort of money in Bathstore/B&Q, we would have something really nasty looking.

However, we did then get Roca Targa taps which were something like £120 for the basin and £150 for the bath. :o

We spent £7,500 on our bathroom, en-suite and downstairs cloakroom. That was for all the stuff, adding two new electric showers (so a reasonably electrician's bill for wiring), and plumbing and tiling done for us. Though the plumber/tiler was my brother who does it for a living and charged us a very reasonable day rate. ;)

There may be some plastering if you need to have old tiles taken off the walls, depending on how easily they come off. If they completely destroy the plaster work, it may need a rough coat to give the tiler a new surface to tile onto (though it won't need to be made completely smooth).

    Just doing two for relatives.

It really depends on the finish your are after.

Including full tiling and trimming figures are close to 2K each for both, including a replacement shower in each.

Surprising how expensive those fitted cupboards and sinks are if yo go a la carte.

Material only cost is close to 2K before "labour" each including everything.

I guess at the end of the day it boils down to what your budget is and whether it is a budget that you need to stick to or whether it can be pushed in order to get the best quality materials and workmanship.

In our first home our suite cost £180 from plumbcentre, tiles were £200 from local tile outlet, flooring was wood laminate (about £50 Wickes) and labour zero (Husband installed the suite and my dad did the tiling for us!). We kept the original shower unit. It looked fine and we kept spending to a minimum knowing that it was not somewhere we were planning on living long term. However, this time round we intend to stay put and therefore are spending a little more to get quality and longevity from our new bathroom which will hopefully stand the test of time!

I agree with Pinkteapot regarding taps! Don't skimp on them :) Did get our suite in Bathstore though. I liked the service (B&Q and Wickes were terrible!), the suite and managed to 'haggle' £400 off the initial price.
  • Hi, I think your budget is OK if you were doing it yourself. However, this is not the case. Your old bathroom will need to be stripped out and rubbish cleared.Which is not cheap anymore. The cost depends on the cost of the suite. I find ebay a good place to look as I have find some super showers and bathroom fittings on there. Word of mouth is normally the best way to find a good tradesman. And I would try Rated People website, quotes will cost nothing. Dont rush into this and really select your builder/plumber well. You need an all rounder if possible. Just beware there are a lot of COWBOYS out there.
    Good luck
