Grinding noise on 4 x 4 - transfer box??

Hi guys,

Got a toyota hilux 2005 3.0 turbo diesel D4D. basically where we live we dont get alot of snow, but this past week, holy hell!!!!:rotfl:

anyway, we dont put the truck in 4 wheel drive that often, but have had to this past week to get about. now I dont know if anyone can help, but since yesterday afternoon the truck has been making a weird grinding noise. now some toyota forums are saying check the diff oil front and rear and others are saying maybe the transfer box is not disengaging properly. Now I dont know much about vehicles im afraid, and hopefully a friend of ours will be looking at it later.

now OH has tried rolling it backwards and forwards as some suggested to try and disengage the transfer box (if it is that!!!) but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas?? and could perhaps point me in the right direction? thanks

2 best places to ask would be the Hilux pickup forum www.hpoc.co.uk or surf forum www.hiluxsurf.co.uk both sites are friendly folks if a little twisted.:rotfl:

Any idea roughly where in the drive train the noise is coming from? Front/rear, left/right? Could be a driveshaft.

you did't lock the diffs did you? some 4x4s dont have a centre diff so should only be used in no grip sistuations
  • Try to put one wheel on grass or jack it up, you may be suffering 'wind up' if youve been driving in 4x4 with diff lock on. If you have the wheel you jack up will spin and 'unwind', may not be your problem but worth a try
  • I agree it sounds as if you have diff lock engaged and it has been winding up. How is the four wheel drive selected on the Hilux, does it have a separate gear stick for selecting 4WD modes?

The last Hilux I drove had a manual selector so it sounds like this could well be the op's issue. I also had an issue on a CRV whereby the rear diff was grinding, all that needed was some new fluid and seals though that's a different type of system to what's on the hilux
