Dividend queries

Before I make a fool of my self phoning Hargraves Lansdown, could somebody explain to me how dividends are paid on shares within a platform such as HL.

A little over a year ago I started investing directly in shares rather than funds as I had previously. I have not yet seen any dividends and want to check this out.

To take a typical example, one of the first shares I bought was Marstons. I bought 905 shares on 21/12/2010. Now I understand these were ex div (XD), but at what point would I expect to receive a divi? Marstons pay an interim divi on 30/6/2011 and final dividend payment on 01/02/2012.

So far nothing has appeared in my account and I just want to understand how these things work and when I might expect to see something.

For info - this is the list of dates given for these share

Final Dividend Payment Date 1-02-2012
Interim Management Statement 27-01-2012
AGM 27-01-2012
Final Ex-Dividend Date 14-12-2011
Final Results 30-11-2011
Trading Announcement 5-10-2011
Interim Management Statement 27-07-2011
Interim Dividend Payment Date 30-06-2011
Interim Ex-Dividend Date 1-06-2011
Interim Results 19-05-2011
Trading Announcement 16-03-2011
Final Dividend Payment Date 1-02-2011
AGM 28-01-2011
Interim Management Statement 28-01-2011
Annual Report 20-12-2010

Many thanks

Roger

The dividends should have been paid into your account on or shortly after the dividend pay days. ie for each Marstons share you should have received the following payments.

    30/06/2011 2.1 Interim
    01/02/2012 3.7 Final

I don't use HL so maybe someone who does will confirm how they make dividend payments.

    Edit:-
I've just taken a look at the HL site and the FAQs say

"A Vantage Fund & Share Account can be set up to treat income in one of three ways:
    1. Reinvestment: Income will be held within your account and accumulated until it exceeds £50 per holding for Unit Trusts/OEICs and £200 per holding for other investments, when it will be automatically reinvested. We will do this within 10 working days of the end of each month.
    2. Deposit: Income will be held on your account pending your further investment instructions.
    3. Pay out an income: Income will be paid out directly to a nominated bank/building society account. This payment will be made within 10 working days following the end of each month.
The instruction you give will apply to all income paying holdings within your Vantage Fund & Share Account."

What income instructions have you given?

You've hit the nail on the head and with a bit more searching I've now found I have an income account hidden in the cash tab. There are various divis in there - didn't get the interim divi on 30/06? not sure why, but I'll do a bit more reserch on the timing, but I did get the recent final divi.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

    Roger

Edit - actually I did get the interim divi - just not looking hard enough (I hate the way HL only show the last 3 months!)

Yup, you do have to go hunting for them! As per noh's post, you can choose what to do with the divis. I sweep mine across to my main cash account (well, my wife's as all divi stock is in her name) and then purchase a holding in another company once it's built up to around £2k.
