Hi,

Does anyone know where I can find information on where these are held and full listings for the auctions?

[TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM]

I'm hoping to set up a business selling stock from these auctions.

Thanks.

A lot of Government auctions go through ordinary auction houses, one I go to gets lots from all sorts of places from seized stock through to bailiff acquired goods or bankruptcy companies . However they are not always cheap unless you have some specialist knowledge. Laptops are often sold exactly how they were recovered, so no leads, no discs and often password protected, so no good for a non techie like me but potentially good for someone with a stock of parts and some good PC knowledge.

Don't get your hopes up, I go to a lot of auctions and can tell you the public pay silly prices for the stuff at police auctions, they always forget about the buyers premium and get carried away. All the good stuff makes near enough retail.
I go to Wilsons auctions every month but never go into the Police hall, it's a huge waste of time, unless you want to buy a load of bikes, these are always quite cheap.

There aren't as many as there used to be, they sell a lot on themselves to private buyers and dispose of a lot of it without using auctions. If you're looking to run a business, go to auctions near you and see what and how they are selling, there's plenty of stuff that isn't police and government stock that you can earn money out of. Although as above the world and his wife are trying to buy at auctions right now and pushing the prices up.

I was an auctioneer at the height of the last recession, had quite a lot of people come through who had plenty of cash from redundancy payments trying to make a living buying and selling from auctions, it isn't the golden ticket it appears. We were getting much higher prices than we had been and not many of them made it work.

Also be careful at auction houses, the majority are fine and dandy, sadly there are some unscrupulous characters out there and your consumer rights can be non existent (if you're buying wholesale they are!), a pallet of flat pack furniture can be nothing more than bonfire wood and you won't get anywhere trying to get your money back.

A car auction used to have monthly police auctions many years back.

Woolen jumpers seemed to be a firm favourite, Lots of clothes minus the labels.
I presume fake labels were removed and the clothing sold?

Tools were quite pricey, Bikes were cheap back then too, Car radios seemed very
popular, This is back when the removeable facia plates came out. With a receipt from
the police auction you could get a new facia for the back end you bought.
    Lot of money though.

  • When a local auction house had them, everything was very expensive.
Best ones I saw were £10 (+10% and the VAT on the 10%) for a boxed Tesco kettle with £9.99 on the box and £18 for a £20 gift voucher (again, 10% then the VAt on the 10% to be added).

I did once get around £150 worth of razor blades for £22 once though (before all the fake ones were on the go).

Wilsons auctions do them around here these days, they've got auction houses throught the country.

My dad would often go up to people after they had just paid over the odds for something (he would tell them so they wouldn't do it again) and explain that they had paid too much. Most of the time they would just say that they knew what they were doing and had done nothing wrong. As he walked away you could see them scratching their heads and working out what they'd done wrong.

As an auction tip, if you go to an auction where the prices are way too high, find out when the next one is and go to that, what tends to happen is that the saleroom regulars decide not to go back and the ones who paid too much stay away too. Our worst auctions were always the week after a good one, so as an auctioneer I was always wary when a few buyers pushed the prices up too much.

used to use wellers alot, but they charge 20% fee on top of 25% + 5% vat fee, so roughly you need to add on 50% to everything you buy..

i have seen lots their going for more than you can buy in shops, people get carried away at these auctions especially when bidding on the internet.

stay away from branded items as they nearly always reach the same price you could buy them in shop for, where the auction is for single items not really worth bothering with they always hit top £, best to look at wholesale lots where the people on the internet can't see clearly whats in the lot/bag, sometimes good items can get mixed in with not so good items and you can pick up a lot quite cheaply
