Car no claims discount certificate from abroad

I seem to be in a tricky situation finding a insurance company that will accept my no claims discount certificate from Cyprus (where my husband was posted with the Armed Forces for 2 years).
I rang Direct Line and got our car insured and said we were waiting for the NCD certificated to be posted on to us. When Direct Line received the certificate, (as well as one from Tesco showing 7 years NCD from before the posting), they said they could not accept it as proof as it did not state the number of years we were entitled to, it just said 'maximum no claims discount'. I rang DL and tried to explain that I had contacted my insurance broker in Cyprus and that was the format they used and could not provide me with anything different. DL still refused to accept my proof so I cancelled my insurance with them as I was not about to pay an extra £500 odd pounds as someone with nill NCD when I have 9 years NCD!!!
DL said it was their underwriters that insist on this and many other underwriters require the same proof. Does anybody know of an insurance company that accepts this kind of international NCD certificate? Please help!

See if a local broker (not swinton) is able to help.
(Is the Tesco proof more than 2 years old? If not, then you could use it with most insurers, though just for the 7 years)0 -
Try a broker near a Military base as they will be used to no claims bonus from HMF foreign bases.
Although you may find they require it to state the number of years, try asking the Cypriot broker to confirm this if it presents a problem0 -
Thanks Quentin, unfortunately the Tesco proof is more than 2 years old so can't use it.0
