In my experience if you speak with the service department and say you can get an equivalent service at X garage for Y pounds they will usually compete with it. They will pay attention if it's a competing franchise in a neighbouring area so you shouldn't be tied to a specific garage.

Does anyone know whether the EU Block Exemption rule would apply to this policy as it does to the manufacturer's warranty?

thank you guys...what iam worried about is that even if they give me a discount on service, they might say that the car needs some work doing (and obviously they will choose wear and tear stuff so it is not covered by warranty) and then I will be their hostage..if i dont pay for it or go and do it somewhere else, my warranty is void

I have told the dealer that i want to cancel the warranty but they are going funny about refunding the money...Am I right in thinking that by law i should have 14 days to cancel the purchase of any financial product?

Yes I am pretty sure a warranty is similar to insurance and should have a 14 days cooling off period. Check your policy details which I hope you have and it should be stated there.

in order not to refund the warranty money, the dealer agreed that i can service the car in any VAT registered garage without invalidating the warranty...I insisted on having that in writing before i collect the car..they said they will hand write it on the policy booklet..is that enough? can they say after few years that it was me who wrote that?

I would be very wary of that. You need that type of assurance from the warranty provider not the dealer.

I dont understand why people pay for expensive warranties then try and save a few pounds on servicing. Most main dealers will price match for service work - last time i checked i could save about £40. Do the main sevicing at dealers and go independent for brake pads , fluid and other things you dont get the stamp for.

When i see a newish car with non main dealer service history i think what else have they not done - same goes for cheapo mis matched tyres. You will get any extra money spent back when you sell again

The Dealer writing something on the warranty book is laughably useless. Have a good look through the dealers terms and conditions as well as the warranty companys and you will find a get out clause along the lines of, "nothing in this document can be changed in any way without the prior written instruction of the issuer"
Incidentally, Car Car Plan had a great write up in the trade press last year. Don't know if that is a good thing though for a consumer.

I agree with you as I am not going to service at independent garage to save 50 or 60 quids but my issue is what happens if at teh dealership service they come out saying you need this and that done? if I say dont do it and go to do it somewhere else, the warranty will be void
