Blower motor no power.

will getting a new lock set fix my problem?
Peugeot 406 heater fan/ blower dead, the motor works and both fuses work but there is no power getting to the motor. I have read that sometimes its the ignition barrel.

Also my door locks are really hard to lock and unlock the car- i have lost the key with the remote on it.

I can get a new lock set and ignition barrel and ecu with remote key quite cheaply.
Will this work as i'm not sure if the immobilizer will prevent the car switching on, or is the immobilizer part of the ignition barrel or ecu and would the remote work the central locking once i've put the key in ignition and held the big button in on key for 30 seconds to reset it.
Killing two birds with one stone?

On Citroens, a common reason for the blower not blowing is that the power transistor has gone. Probably a good chance that Peugeots use the same components and suffer the same problems.

what about the new ignition barrel, as this seems to be the problem with most.

OP your locks just need lubricant, some WD40 to clean the muck out, followed by a light oil (sprayed into the lock barrels).

And as it's a Pug, I reckon your locks are damp and freezing overnight. My 306 was a nightmare for doing this.

Nothing you describe points to the ignition barrel being at fault.

Two contradictions I've noticed in your post:

How do you know the motor works, if it's got no power?

How can you "put the key in ignition and held the big button in on key for 30 seconds to reset it" if you've lost your remote key?

    You mean resistor pack?

At any rate it's a common problem with the vast majority of cars, garage fails to change the pollen filter and clean out the drainage channels, the blower motor takes in water, starts to rust, this pulls too much current through the resistor pack and the thermal fuse blows.

    Nope, the power transistor.

Had one go on a previous Citroen Xsara. It's a common fault (after much research of the frenchcarforums).

There is a resistor pack that sits in the blower channel under the passenger foot-well.
This is responsible for most heater motor faults, Ford focus are nutritious for it, luckily the default if it blows is on full or nothing.
However on French cars it just cuts the power.

I removed the blower motor and tested it with a power supply, the blower motor is working

Once i change the ignition barrel with the new key

I have checked every fuse and they are all in working order and have a current going through them

As you've tested the blower, i'd say you need to search for the controller or resistor pack, usually slotted into the blower outlet somewhere (self cooling).

  • As 406 owner, who also has had this blower fault, here is my advice.

This fault is a common fault for 406 and IS most likely to do with the ignition switch.

Before you start checking that though, check the easy things. First, check the fuses.
Then, you could test the blower is getting power by removing the plug from it from under the glove box and using a multimeter to see if you're getting 12v at the plug.

Finally, when you turn on the blower it sounds like the blower is blowing, but on a low setting, but it isn't. If you wiggle the ignition key whilst the car is running and at idle, with the blower on full speed, you may get the blower to kick in and work.
I ended up removing the covers around the ignition switch and wiggling the ignition wires until the blower kicked in, then cabled tied them in position. Never had a problem since. The full fix is to get the ignition barrel replaced.

Regarding the locks, some find a squirt of wd 40 cures them, but like me I found the locks still spun around in their barrels, sometimes. I found it's a bit of an art and you have to have the key at a bit of an angle.
Removing the door cards and cleaning them can all help.

Alternatively, if the car is an old mk 1 version, then you can sometimes replace the keys and locks from ebay and reprogramme it to the car. You can also reprogramme the original keys with the central locking by using the process in the manual.

Newer mk2 cars are a litle harder to fix and can be costly to replace all the keys and re configure the central locking. I am not too oh fay with all of that side of things, so ask on the following forum:

Lots of very helpful and knowledgeable people there.

^^ Surely if it were the ignition switch, it would affect more vehicle systems than just the blower?
I can't see any reason why you'd have a separate circuit to the ignition barrel just for the blower.....

It's a common fault. Even though I love my 406 to bits, (and I stand by the fact it's the best car I have ever owned!), I have no idea what some of the electrics do!:p

As I understand it, there is a wire which goes from the ignition barrel to the blower motor, for whatever reason the French designer decided at the time!

Another fix is to cut this wire and bypass the ignition switch completely which allows the blower to work fine.
Taken from the 406 oc forum: might help you seek out the wire and give it a wiggle!
"There is power to the blower which comes via the ignition
switch and i have had similar problems, there are 3 plugs coming from the switch ,a black single wire that plugs straight into the fuse box the one by your right knee. Another twin wire plug that also goes into the fuse box. Then there is the third plug
that goes to a connector at the base of the steering column and this is the one that carries live feed to the blower ,yellow i think it is."
