Feeding dogs

I have 2 Bearded Collies currently fed on Hi life minced morsels with either tinned meat or turkey mince added - costs me about £18 per week. The dog is overweight and the b*tch is underweight (fussy eater!) . I have been thinking of feeding Orijen as the reviews are so good. Can anyone tell me if this food will be too high in protein for the overweight dog and give me an idea of what it should cost per week to feed 2 dogs of this size on it? many thanks

  • Can't comment on Orijen but have you thought of Skinners - http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/field---trial-products/duck---rice/

Their Duck & Rice, Turkey & Rice and Salmon & Rice are dairy, wheat & gluton free & hypoallergenic (these varieties only not the other ones they do)

It's a working dog food - although happpy fed to non-working dogs - and is VAT free which is a bonus. A 15kg bag of Duck & Rice RRP is £22.99 although you can get much cheaper online.

A 15kg bag used to last my 38kg Lab for 5 - 6 weeks so would be considerably cheaper than the £18/week you're paying just now. HTH

Ok so putting my dog trainer hat on. Hi life is full of sugar which would explain why your dogs are over weight and under weight as dogs cant manage with a large amount of sugar. And there is alot of water in turkey mince and tinned food. Also it doesnt sound like they are getting alot of carbs in there diet.

Orijen is great and the protein is good because it is good protein from meat and not cheap fillers like alot of foods but its expensive and there are good medium priced foods out there.

I feed my 5 Whites premium, 2x 15kg bags with delivery cost me £61 every 6 weeks and they get chicken wings for brekkie.

Others to look at are Burns, Arden Grange, JWB, CSJ, Wainwrights, Skinners as suggested by rising from the ashes. Your best bet is to get samples from all the companys and try the dogs on them then try and pick a food that has good meat based protein (few and far between) or a protein amount less than 18-20%. How old are the dogs and how much exercise do they get? For example a 'teenage' dog will be skinny while they fill out as will an older dog and a dog running for hours and hours each day will need a higher level of protein to keep them going.

I hope that helps a bit and ive not just confused you more :o
