Freecycling Virgin Media Modem?

Hello all,
Thought I'd see what some other people thought...
Someone on Freecycle is after a Virgin Media Modem. I've got one that was sent to me in May 2009, but for whatever reason I never used it. It remains property of Virgin Media.
If I give it to someone else, and they use it, will Virgin be able to identify it as the one sent to me, and will they care after almost 3 years?
I'm happy to do someone a favour, but not if Virgin are likely to come asking me to pay for it...
What do you think?
Cheers,
MBE

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Yes they can trace it & they'd need to call VM to activate it,so VM would refuse as it was sent to you,and they could also be done for handling stolen goods & you could also be billed for it.0

I used to know someone that would 'hack' cable modems to give them free broadband. They bought a lot off ebay and sold them for profit. They would remove all trace of the original identifiers. As far as im aware this cannot be done anymore. I dont understnand why someone would want a second hand one anymore as you get one free when you subscribe....0

All I can think of is they've broken theirs so will be charged for replacement.
I might phone Virgin and see what they say. :rotfl:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

If it's broken then surely they replace it for free. After all, it's a cheap box0 -
Ours went wrong, just told Virgin that and they sent out another, did not request the old one back. They insisted from their end that it looked OK, but we told them it kept dropping out, they still sent a new one. We could have done the same if we had broken it.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

Hi, These virgin modems will only work at the property they are sent to and registered with.
Virgin wont be able to activate at a different property your need a new modem. As mentioned above, just say it stopped working. Be !!!!ed off and say I need this sorted, sky deals are looking good blah blah. Blag your way through.0 -
It's probably someone wanting a VMNG300 modem (which works) to replace their hideous Superhub (which frequently doesn't).
Or maybe somebody want's a DOCSIS2 only modem to escape a badly oversubscribed DOCSIS3 network as a straight downgrade to 10Mbps with a DOCSIS3 modem will leave you on DOCSIS3 and VM no longer supply anything other than Superhubs.
VM won't activate a modem that wasn't sent to the account in question so they are wasting their time. There is no legitimate market for used cable modems.0
