Anyone worked for Yodel

I filled an online app in for Yodel quite a few months back and ive just had a call asking if im still interested in the job. Its part time parcel delivery using my own vehicle so I think its on a self employed basis. They want to interview me at home which I find a bit strange to be honest but just thought id ask about them first.

Does Crossways Business Park ring any bells, if so I would be veeeerry wary. There it is a smallish type firm that have takenover a discarded DHL shed. Have had experience of this particular Depot through a third party.

Yodel is a rebrand of Home delivery network limited (HDNL). I was a employed driver for HDNL for many years as a multi drop driver and also had a period delivering to the self employed workers who use their own transport.

Yodel try to use self employed people because it's cheaper as you would take on most of the costs. A few couriers do ok but most don't stay very long and I would not recommend working for Yodel (HDNL).

The trouble with multi drop is people order stuff off the internet and then go off to work for the day and wonder why they get a card through the letter box. As a courier you are not paid for parcels you are unable to deliver. You can sometimes leave parcels in a safe place like a garage or shed if it is not a signature parcel. You could leave parcels with neighbours but a lot are not at home so that could mean knocking on 3 or 4 doors. If you have say for example 50 parcels and 30 customers not at home this then means you end up calling on 80 addresses or more to deliver the parcels.

The reason they want to interview you at home is they would want to be able to check you have available secure storage space for your parcels.

DHL have outsourced a lot of their work to Yodel (HDNL ) so some of these sites have probably been rebranded as Yodel.

Just being pedantic here - DHL haven't outsourced work to HDNL. HDNL bought DHL Domestic early in 2010. Later that year they started the rebranding to Yodel in an attempt to distance themselves from the terrible reputation HDNL has - unfortunately hasn't worked.

I agree with "neilcr". Yodel are renowned as a bad firm to work for, or to do business with as a seller or buyer. I now ask online sellers who they use for their deliveries. If they answer "Yodel", I go elsewhere.

Actually I have no preference who delivers my parcels as they are all much of a muchness to be honest. I could not recommend working self employed or franchise for any of the the well known parcel companies.
Nearly always better to be a employed driver except maybe for part timers.

With being in the parcel industry for nearly 24 years up to 2009 when I took voluntary redundancy I can state that HDNL in my area paid a lot better than Parcel force, City Link, Royal Mail, DHL, DPD. The only one who ever lost one of my personal parcels was the Royal Mail who have twice lost parcels of mine.

To be honest if DHL had that good a reputation how come they had so few customers and paid their drivers so poorly ?
  • If you are on JSA with over 26 weeks behind you dont go there - they will use you to Their Advantage not yours - you have minimum or no rights,

Listen to neilcr he obviously knows what he is talking about and the Firm.

There must be other driving jobs out there - Cold Call Locally - Firms may be interested in having a Relief Driver combined with Warehouse and Loading when not driving - the Summer and Holidays are just round the corner then all will be scrambling for Relief Drivers.

Good Luck in your Search and get on the books of every local Firm now so you are first in line for them to call in and already know who they will be getting. Remember to let them know if you get a Job so not available.

Yes, how DARE they work for a living!, our local Royal Mail depot has the same Attitude, if you miss one of their Ad-Hoc 'seat of yer pants' deliveries you have to go collect from them, which is fine, until you find that they close at 2PM!. When I see comments like this, it does really make me wonder whether anybody still in a 9-5 is actually considered to be a minority group or a freak of nature, and we are all fools as it seems to be the norm in society that people are now considered weird if they aren't seen to be at home during 'normal' daytime working hours, especially if it inconveniences people like Yodel drivers, Meter Readers etc.

Fortunately a few delivery services have cottoned on to the fact that people have to work and evolved with it, DPD have a text service which informs the recipient of a delivery window of 1 hour, so at least you can pop home or get a neighbour or relative to keep a look out or call around to sign for it. Its better to lose one hours pay than sit in all day for a parcel which may or may not turn up. Other forward thinking delivery companies have an Evening delivery option, and some have even lowered the prices of Saturday AM deliveries.

Even supermarket deliveries offer the same level of flexibility, often with deliveries right upto 9.30 or 10pm. Perhaps its certain delivery companies who are still stuck in the dark ages, and think its 1812 not 2012

Probably better to have a pop at your management for not being ahead of the game and changing with the times, rather than criticising those who have the audacity to have a Full time Job.

I'm sure at the end of the day, if everybody took a day off work, just because a parcel 'might' arrive at some point between 8AM and 5PM, the whole country would grind to a halt, so be very careful what you wish for!
