And the OP said that the iPhone app was giving 39 -> 30mph at which point the dealer could rightly tell her to sod off as the speedo is compliant.

Even if the car is in warranty this is still a waste of the OP's time and money, even if that money is just petrol to the Mazda dealership and 50p for a tiny cup of overpriced instant coffee from a machine with no sugar or milk in it.

nope, because they are not allowed to under read.

I can't believe the people in this thread who would advocate that the only sensensible option is to take it to the stealers.

The only sensible first step is to take 10 minutes out of your time take both vehicles out and see for yourself what the other vehicle says the speed is, before potentially wasting everyones time and money.

And the iphone app should be relied on? Come on.

ok if the app said 39 and the speedo said 30 then, assuming the app is accurate and was used in the manner I described that would be a problem. I originally misread it as the other way around but looking back I was wrong on this.

why shouldn't the iphone app be relied on?

The numerous gps apps that show speed on my nokia e7 are accurate
  • why shouldn't the iphone app be relied on?

There are loads of different apps available for the iphone, some good, some not so good, and some rubbish ones, and who knows how accurate some of the GPS related ones are?

Plus we don't know if the OP tested at constant speed on a straight flat road with a good view of the sky etc.

For example if they tested in Glasgow city centre, the reading would be all over the place as even the best GPSes can't get an accurate lock there.
