Washer dryer break down 9 months old

Hi,
I am looking for some advice on what to do next.
I purchased a Hotpoint washer dryer from Boots Electrical Appliances in April 2006. In January 2007 the dryer stopped working so I put in a call to Hotpoint who arranged for an engineer to come out about 10 days later (had to take a whole day off work as they could only specify the day not time).
The engineer diagnosed the problem and said that a new motor was required. An appointment was booked for the following week for engineer to attend with the new part. I took the day of work but Hotpoint telephoned on the morning of the day the engineer was due to attend to say that he was ill and that the appointment had been rescheduled for the next day.
I had already booked the day off work to wait for the engineer (it takes me two hours to commute to work so just popping back to work was not an easy option).
The next day Hotpoint called again in the morning to say that the engineer could not make the appointment due to being off sick, this time they could only re-schedule for the following week. Again I had booked the day off work and by the time I got into work I would have taken a half day off.
Hotpoint were really unhelpful and unflexible so I deceided to call Boots Kitchen Appliances from who I bought the machine. They said that they would speak to Hotpoint, but to cut a long story short after many telephone calls we are back at the situation of me having to take a fourth day off work in total, to wait for the engineer (with no guarantee that he will actually show).
I pointed out to Boots Kitchen Appliances that this is unreasonable and that I should surely be given some compensation for all the inconvinience, after all a washer dryer should last longer than 9 months. They basically said not our fault, Hotpoint say the same.
I live in a flat so the dryer function is quite important (no space outside to dry clothes). Meanwhile I am without dryer function until I can take another day off work. I am also wasting my holiday days sorting this out.
Am I being unreasonable, or do I just have to take another day off work to get this fixed and expect nothing for the trouble?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks
