Do I have to knock VAT off?

I am a registered business on ebay. I have a buyer who lives in Croatia who has asked me to knock off the VAT because they live outside of the UK. Do I have to do this? I have sent hundreds of items abroad but have never been asked this before.

  • If you are registered for VAT (have a UK VAT number) then you supply to Croatia as an export outside the EU and do not charge VAT.

If you are not registered for VAT (do not have a UK VAT number) then you are not collecting any VAT on the sale and cannot therefore deduct it.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

If you're registered for VAT and unsure what to do call HMRC or your accountant to make sure you do it correctly. It's pretty straightforward, if you file your own return there is a section for import/export outside the EU. I often get mixed up as to which countries are in the EU and which aren't, I'd end up looking up Croatia.

As above though, if you aren't registered it isn't your problem and the buyer should have asked before they purchased.
