The engine may last longer, but remember that most of the rest of the car is usually identical ;)

If it's a Mk1 Ford Ka, then they last until a few months after the anti corrosion warranty expires.

I know a taxi driver who's mondeo was on 315k last time I seen him a year ago!

Thats nothing! I see a petrol engined car on ebay two years ago like mine with over 450k on the clock :D

High mileages for Derv engines are nothing unusual but petrol engines never normally get the chance to prove themselves.

What on earth is a surf?
  • If looked after properly, cars will last a very long time.

The greatest mileage car I've ever had was my Volvo 740 which had a mileage of 342,000 when I sold it. It was still going 12 months later.

My kids have my old Astra (W Reg) which has 107,000 and the engine is as sweet as a nut.

I have a 20 year old Honda that sits outside 365 days. It usually starts first time, and if it does not then I know the battery is on its way out.
The good points are: comfortable, well built, very reliable. The bad parts are: very expensive parts.

Currently rust is eating away at the wheel arches and ther are scraped and dents along the sides thanks to people whom can't manoeuvre cars in Tesco car parks.

Yes, I would buy another honda.

I've a 22 year old Renault. Much the same, apart from the wheelarches, mine are ok, and spares are cheap.

Exactly, if the owner is prepared to look after it, replace parts before they destroy the car, service it regularly, and most inportant change the oil, then a modern car should just "keep on runnin'".
You only have to look at the number of classics on the road (from a time when cars rotted away in front of your eyes), and then think of the huge mileages people did in old vehicles like Beetles, Minis and Imps.
Today's cars are much better, but the only thing likely to let you down are complicated electrics, so choose a vehicle which is as uncomplicated as possible.
Sadly, most people today believe that a car is destined for the scrappy when it gets to ten years old (Vauxhall "lifetime guarantee" - 100K miles or ten years - what a joke!).
We have a 1996 Alfa in the garage with 150K miles, no rust and it will start instantly even if left for months (may need the battery charging;)).
Our 2000 Mondy 1.8 petrol has 123K on the clock and is more comfortable and economic than our three year old Mazda.
