Rev's - when to change gear?

When do you change gear when driving, I change at 2,000 revs, to get the best speed/fuel economy? If the revs are higher before you change will the fuel economy be worse.

I just *know* when to change. The only time I ever used a rev counter was during my first lessons and I had to make sure I had enough gas so as not to stall when setting off!
Matters not anyhoo, my little Ka hasn't got a rev counter so I just change up and down according to the sound of the engine or my speed.
