Student Finance won't send money to Uni

Options
Student Finance are just not sending the tuition fee loan money to my University.

It started last year when some idiot at Uni told student finance I'd withdrawn from my course - I hadn't. I had lots of problems with SF saying I owed them money etc, and it took 8 months to get sorted out.

once it was sorted, they were due to send the second instalment of my tuition fee loan - they never. They kept fobbing me (and my Uni's finance department) off saying that it was a technical error and the money would be paid eventually - this was April last year.

A payment for this year was due to be made by SF to my Uni on 2nd Feb 2012 - hey ho it's still saying Approved, just like the other instalment from the last academic year.

And to top it all off, I can't even apply as a continuing student for next year for some bizarre reason.

I am, along with thousands of others, seriously beginning to lose faith in the Student Loan system of this country.

Sounds to me as if it's actually something at your university's end.

While the SLC will have an approved date, this is set in advance of the university sending back an Attendance Confirmation Report. If the university do not return the ACR, then money will not be released on the date specified.

Think of it from a positive viewpoint. If it's not been paid, you won't be accruing interest on it.

Student Finance are just not sending the tuition fee loan money to my University.

Have you contacted them The tactic of ringing per day as a very old woman finger-pointing down phone"Rarararara@SF! in my day we got better service attuide":) helps greatly and explining to them helps SF need a kick up the bottom sometimes

It started last year when some idiot at Uni told student finance I'd withdrawn from my course - I hadn't. I had lots of problems with SF saying I owed them money etc, and it took 8 months to get sorted out.

Same thing happened to my son he was off for a week and they throught he left the course due to illness and because at the time he was unemployed so he had to apply for SF with help from JSA staff anyway cut a long story short he filled in formsand never got his loan or payment, and the JSA cut alot of people out of the course but my son was fine. Just a error and he was allowed back on his course no probs. I would discuss this with your UNI sounds like your getting the Fob off from someone there.

once it was sorted, they were due to send the second instalment of my tuition fee loan - they never. They kept fobbing me (and my Uni's finance department) off saying that it was a technical error and the money would be paid eventually - this was April last year.

SF sorts the funds im confused on what your UNI has to do with that part

SF asks for all paperwork form you then take up to 12 weeks to verify it also with attendance records thats why they say processing on the site. I understand your frustration with this from your post but imagine if you had over 50,0000 applications for university or college to process you clearly be backlogged also. ALot of my sons friends and himself are waiting for their loans and have been waiting since applying in December when we spoke to SF or when he has been in contact he has been confirmed as receiving it on the 28th of this month. so hang in there! ;)

If you never had a loan first time you need to re apply think of it as a bonus you dont need to pay it back

A payment for this year was due to be made by SF to my Uni on 2nd Feb 2012 - hey ho it's still saying Approved, just like the other instalment from the last academic year.

Check you have provided the correct b ank dets...Do you have more then one you may of used orprovded to them that does sound odd. When approved the finance goes to UNi on a speficied day and you get a text message or notifaction of funds in post.

And to top it all off, I can't even apply as a continuing student for next year for some bizarre reason.

This is flase. Whoever told you that tosh has mis-informed you my son is on a two year HND Undergrad course (2nd year now) He had the exact same problems you face months of myself and wifey aguring with the educational facilitys as we had defult threats from the college he attends with there ledger department about payments BUt he attends his Part time course no problems the college he attends knows that SF are very slow at patyment this time of year.

the problem you face is that the blind leads the blind the college/University do not talk to Student Fianance saying they cannot do so and the Student Finance dont tell the university when they going to coff up the goods. It puts yourself in Limbo Sort of like the Goverment of Today Takes 10 years to realise there was a problem and another 30 years to fix it. :) welcome to bureaucracy at its best.

you best ringing up and asking them to send you a email or proof of sent finance that is how we did it we spoke to a customer services officer who put it in black and white for my son that the funds are being processed then it was a choice of taking in any laptop that connected to WI-fi in UNiversity to show you have done all what required. The problem with student Finance this time of year is that they are so Backlogged with applications across the country they cannot even sort out a p*ss up in a brewery putting it bluntly.

I am, along with thousands of others, seriously beginning to lose faith in the Student Loan system of this country.

Welcome to the realworld Im a 39 year old bald self employed business man with 4 kids:rotfl::rotfl:I lost faith with it loooong time ago. I do hope you get it sorted mate! and enjoy UNi they where my best days of my life

Depends on whether the technical problem is on the SFE side (for example they're having difficulties sending the payment) or the university's side in terms of reporting that the OP is in attendance.

How do you know this is false? In terms of officially being able to apply then yes there's no reason (as far as we know) why the OP cannot apply however the OP may be referring to the fact that the online application form won't let her due to the current problems with her account.

OP, as Taiko said it does sound like it's a problem with your university, I'm guessing the only way of resolving it is to keep harassing the finance department and keeping in contact with the SLC. Good luck.
  • The problem is with Student Finance - not my University.

SF requested that my Uni needed to inform them I was still a student.
So, my Uni phoned them and told them, and sent them a letter confirming this. At the same time I also sent them a copy of the letter via recorded delivery which they received. I phoned SF a few weeks ago and they told me they know when my course ends and that I'm still a student etc.

I get my maintenance loan and grants fine - with no hassle at all.
It is just the tuition fee's.

Spoke to the finance dept at my Uni in October, they said not to worry about it and that the money will come through soon enough (This is money that should have been paid to them in April 2011). They keep changing the payment date then it just says Approved and nothing happens.

Every time i try to apply for student finance it ONLY lets me do it as a new student.
When I phoned SF the guy told me that they weren't accepting returning students applications - which is idiotic as I know many people have applied already. I just have to await the paper applications to come out in March - apparently.

  • Can I just add that this has been going on since February / March 2011.

I sent letters off in MARCH AND APRIL 2011.
Student Finance have RECEIVED this confirmation, and it is on the system.

  • I phoned SF and apparently there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to apply online for next year - so he is sending me paper forms. And there is a call log stating that the other guy told me about applications nor being open till March - he is going to be spoken to.

Also apparently my Uni have to 'accept' the tuition fee payments, which they only did for the first instalment of 2010 - they didn't accept the second instalment for 2010/2011 or any instalments for 2011/2012. So I emailed uni to get them to do that as they sent me a reminder email about paying my tuition fee's - idiots.

Should hopefully be resolved soon then. That'll be the ACR I mentioned.
  • Can't believe it's taken almost 12 months to get this sorted! - mind you, my University are ridiculously unorganised with everything. I regret going to this institution!

Thanks Taiko for your insight :)

Second this. They are absolute awful. Always get different info everytime i speak to someone. This has meant that the 2 years i have been at uni i haven't received my grant until 2nd term so always skint 1st term.

You just need to constantly badger them.

    Which Uni are you at?
  • I'm at an independent place in Greenwich.
My degree will come from University of Plymouth though.
