Hi all
This might be a really stupid question but hey ho ..
My family is rather big and were spread out all over the UK and in Australia aswell. I've been talking to my SIL and she wants a way of allowing all our family to see pics and vids of my Niece without them being on facebook and the like. Obviously there is e-mail and posting them but is there a way you can get a website that you can only access with a username and password?
Obviously my Nieces safety is paramount. It's just an idea.
Thanks

Have you thought of creating an account on Photobucket (or similar) and giving the password to those you want to see your stuff?0
-
Thats not a bad idea Harry Flashman thanks. I dont understand how photobucket works though won't that mean the pics will be able to be seen by others in general?0

The answer is yes it is called a password protected directory and the folder you want to protect needs a htaccess and a htpasswd file in it.
For this though you need a domain and an ISP and access via FTP (all of this is usually provided at a click of a button by ISPs these days) you may be able to do it via your internet provider if they also give you free websites
Google htpasswd it will give you all the details you need on this. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=htpasswd&gbv=2&oq=htpasswd&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=0l0l0l219l0l0l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0
Far simpler is Skydrive (while it is free) which comes with a hotmail
www.windowslive.co.uk/skydrive
account or google which provides similar
Plenty of free file sharing and storage sites around whilst they try to make the cloud mor popular (needs better upload speeds first).
I hope any of this has been at all helpfulI started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0 -
My family uses Dropbox to share our snaps. You need to be granted access to the online folder to see it, and you can also install dropbox so that new photos are auto-downloaded to your computer. Works well for us.0

Picasa also lets you have 'private' albums.

I saw this on Click (BBC news Thing)
pen.io
It is for publishing content on line ..Looks pretty easy and best of all is free
It is not locked like you wish for ..But may be worth a look at for stuff that maybe you don't mind the world seeing .
The link is genuine but if your concerned then don't click but use google to find it....I have not tried it
One day I will get round to it. 0 -
A bit more complicated than the above, but you can also setup something like Coppermine on a website you've arranged hosting for, which would let people view/comment and even upload their photos, with you being able to set who can do what.
However that's a bit more complicated than most of the other options mentioned, and also needs you to have a personal website so not free (coppermine itself is, but hosting tends to cost).0 -
I know you said no to Facebook, but it has a lot of privacy tools.
You can setup an account to share, or one each, and not allow anyone else to view them, or even know they exist.
your niece will be safe, and you will be sharing pictures and videos.0 -
Create a Private Album in Photobucket
Search the support pages on photobucket for lots of guidance on how to do this.0 -
When you upload photogaphs to Photobucket, even the ones for 'public' viewing they can be saved to an 'album' the name of which you decide. You could then save the pictures using, for example picture1, picture 2.
A special link is then available, which you could send to your family. they can then click this and access the photographs. Using just basic photograph file names, as above, means nobody should be able to find the pictures by accident.
A password protected, or private album option will obviously give extra security, but as I have not used that option before, I don't know how they work.
here's the Photobucket link
