Travel Money Cards

Hi, I'm new to the site and this query may have been answered in depth for which apologies...

Our son is off to Camp America for 5 months. Whilst in the post office I asked about travellers cheques and was directed to a leaflet called Travel Money Card Plus from Mastercard where one loads up a card in various currencies (in our case, dollars) in advance (£50-£5000). Does anyone know who offers the best rate in this respect and are the cards worthwhile?

I have a FairFX card and it's easy to use and the rates are lower than using my other credit cards overseas.
