How do you create an XP recoverycd?

I have a dell inspiron 1300 with no recovery cd. I cannot find the Dell PC restore on the computer and can't create a bootable windows disc.
Is it possible to use another program to achieve this?
The reason I am doing it is because the laptop freezes for about 3 mins when the windows update symbol appears in the task bar. It then says it is unable to install any of the updates. This happens every time new updates are available.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers

You might have a bad sector on your disk. You can check this by going to control Panel--> Admin tools--> event viewer and looking at the system log. If you see a Red sign near and about the time you have tried to install the updates and it points to a disk problem.
Either way goto command shell and type chkdsk
this will check your disk. if it finds a problem then type chkdsk /F to fix it and this will happen on reboot.
As always if you can get anything valuable off onto a CD or somehting before you do this the better.0 -
till you get a disk try updateing from windiz.com. you'll need either firefox or oprea0

In the case of Dell's "PC-Restore by Symantec" feature, Dell has supplied the user with a backup image made at the factory, and this backup is stored in the DSR partition. It is this backup that is restored from when the Ctrl+F11 keys are pressedEx forum ambassador

Having spent so much time messing around with this it seems that it only stalls when downloading Microsoft office updates. Are there any known problems?
cheers again

Ask a friend for a windows cd. A Windows home OEM would be the ideal one. then you can use the activation key on the bottom of your laptop legally.0
