Silly question - can anyone advise please

This is a silly question.
We have just got a wireless router - speedtouch gateway thing.
Must this always be left on. I'm a bit worried to leave on modem/router 24/7 but as the switch is at the back - I assume it is usual to just leave these on.
Do you not turn it off when you turn off the computer.
Thank you

Yes it is normal to leave routers on 24/7 and they are designed to be left on. Some users do switch them off but the amount of electricity used is very small, so it would not save you much money.

I just feel a wee tad safer during my sleep with all the electrical goods switched off, apart from alarm clocks & freezer which are left on

have you secured the wireless signal ?
have you changed the default admin password ?
turned off the internet facing admin port ?

If yes, to all the above, leave it on and it will be as safe as can be... unless it is turned off, otherwise you may have ppl wirelessly leeching your bandwidth, doing illegal downloads and setting up tunnels through the router's firewall, while you sleep.

It is not just you saving the small amount of power that it takes to run a router but the millions that can also turn them off (t'is one small turn off for the man, one giant turn off for mankind ... ).

They are more secure if turned off and it is not a problem turning them off and on as you use the computer.
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.
