DIY fitted furniture?

I want to do some fitted furniture in one room, with a bridging unit to add extra storage above the bed (old fashioned, I know, but we need the storage!). The wall is 283cm, and the bed is 145cm, which doesn't leave that much room.
I've looked at Ikea Pax however they are too big and they don't do bridging units. I've thought about trying to put their wall kitchen units in as a bridging unit, however they are quite shallow and don't give as much storage, plus they don't really fit in to the room.
I've found a couple of websites that do supply only fitted furniture however when I price up the wardrobes and bridging units its over £1200 which seems crazy if I install it myself.
Does anybody have any tips or hints of what we can do? Would we be better getting a carpenter to build it all in cheap MDF or would that look a state? We are in Manchester if that makes any difference.

If it was me, I'd be asking around for a good local carpenter - get a price from him - at least you'll know if that is an option then0

You used to be able to buy the cabinets and doors separately at IKEA, and they're often co-ordinating sizes. Might be worth checking if they do a suitable - and deeper - cabinet size in another section, that PAX doors would fit?0

Hi Outer Limits- I have looked at bathroom and kitchen cabinets in Ikea as well as some of the units for the lounge and just can't make it all fit!0
