Am i paying a fair price for pre paid coin meter?

I'm paying about ten pounds a week for my electricity and I work full time and I only use it in the evenings. Is this a fair price? Or am i paying too much? It says 35 at the top on a dial which I don't know what it means as it is taped over. I'm not sure about this as my neighbour's dial is only on 20? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

We can't tell you what is 'fair' unless we know how many kWh units you use. That will tell us the price per unit.
When you feed the meter with £x, how many units does that put on the meter?

A kWh is around 10p depending on tariff.

I would love to know where this mythical 10p per kWh tariff is that everyone use as a standard for electricity. I just put my details into uswitch and top of the list is Eon with

Electricity24.41p per KWh (23.25p excl. VAT)11.23p per KWh (10.69p excl. VAT) above 900 kWh p.a
No way does that work out at 10p per kWh

    4200 kWh for £542.93 gives 12.92 p per kWh.

If you are actually putting cash into the meter the chances are it is a private one belonging to a landlord.
I can't remember the reference but there is a legal maximum price landlords can charge if this is the case!

Landlords are not allowed to make a profit and you are legally entitle to see what he is paying per unit. Phone your LL and ask him how much he is charging you pre Kwh, he is legally required to tell you.

What make/model is the meter, there may be information online about it.

  • Hi,

it might be this type of meter,

    pp100.png
you may have to zoom in,

in the small window in the centre,

the pointer at the top will tell you if set at A or B rate,

the dial in the middle, how many unused units,

the 3 digit number at the bottom counts the coins inserted.

Now across to the coin mechanism, in this picture, at the bottom of the handle, the dial will tell you how many units you get for your £, depending if set at A or B rate.
