restoring colour to small faded patches of wooden floor

I have an original mahogany colour wooden floor where the colour has faded in small patches (eg. where my feet are when watching tv). I would like to have the whole floor sanded and revarnished but it there something suitable for just touching up worn patches in the meantime. Last year i thought I had found something but it only restored the shine, not the actual colour.
Most of the possible options I see in stores don't come in tester size containers to try out first.
