brown stain left by roof leak

realised there was a problem when a brown stain apeared couple of months ago and slowly got bigger on kitchen ceiling (was a leak on flat felted roof above), had the roof re-done a couple of weeks ago and was told to leave the stain to dry, which it now has.

ive been advised to paint over the stain using a mould/stain treatment paint then paint over that as normal by my brother

but also been advised to get plaster board cut out and replaced by roofer who would be glad to do this (is he generating his own work?)

not got a clue on diy so any advised really appreciated the stain is over a 2ft x 2ft square but just small 3in patches and a couple of brown lines all bone dry now

If it's just a stain paint over it with Stain Stop or something similar and then with emulsion. If the plasterboard surface has warped then either get it cut out and reboarded or rake out the warped bits and use polyfilla or live with it (after painting). It happened to our dining room ceiling for a similar reason and I am living with it for now.

will i get away with just painting the stained area or will i have to paint the whole ceiling with the stain block?

i will paint the whole ceiling with the white emulsion
  • As already stated a stain block or a gloss paint will do the same. Even if you have to do a couple of coats. Then when fully dry, emulsion over.

You will need to paint the stained area with Stain Stop and then the whole ceiling with emulsion.

You will need to paint the stained area with [strike]Stain Stop[/strike] your chosen preparation product and then repaint the whole ceiling.

  • Have a brownish stain about the size of a dinner plate on the bedroom ceiling which I can't stand looking at anymore, thanks to everyone on this thread I can 'fix it' myself now :) It only took my landlords 6 years to finally send someone onto the roof to discover just how many tiles were cracked/slipped and that the flashing wasn't properly fixed, I wouldn't mind but the stain was the size of a saucer when we first moved in and I was told to just emulsion over it because it wasn't a problem lol

  • just use normal undercoat (the same stuff you use under gloss paint) (no point using expensive stain blocks) then paint over the whole ceiling with emulsion or whatever you wanna use.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
