Ipad/Iphone syncing & app question

Afternoon All
This might be a daft question, or really obvious but I can't for the life of me figure it out
Whenever I plug my ipad or iphone into my computer to back them up via itunes, it always syncs all of the apps. I've got loads of apps on the ipad that I don't want on the iphone and vice versa, but I can't work out how to 'allocate' apps to individual devices. I've tried the Apple website and had a quick google but I haven's really found anything relevant.
Any help would be much appreciated.

If in doubt, create diff PC users called eg. iphone and ipad . . open itunes in either and allocate whatever songs/apps etc to that device only ...

Possibly a silly question, but have you tried unticking the "Sync Apps" check box for your devices?0
