Hi Stuart
I can recommend a few hire firms that my family have used in the past - Rose Narrowboats (based near Rubgy), Calcutt Boats and Kate Boats. We've been boating for 30 years now and still enjoy being out "on the cut".
I hope these links work (apologies if they don't) and you find them useful:

Canal Junction has a wealth of info, broken down into various regions.

It goes without saying that during the school holidays the price goes up, but would recommend a long weekend as a taster to see if you like poodling about at 4mph!

I have booked with Discount Boat Hire this year. Going to do the Stourport Ring for a week. Collecting a boat from Worcester Marina.0

We used Rose (near Rugby) for a couple of holidays. The central location gives you a number of route options.
We've not been on a boat for many years as we're restricted to school holidays

If you are restricted to school holidays you can use your Tesco Clubcard points with UK Boat Hire. Although I found a good deal with Discount Boat Hire for Easter and they have 14 locations where you collect the boat from. I can't wait.0

Our last two trips have been with Alvechurch Waterways who are now one of a number of fleets from www.ukboathire.com
They have some of the highest spec boats around (many of which are 5 star rated) so this does make them more expensive. It means you get things such as an electric coffee maker, toaster and microwave. There is also an inverter to supply limited mains power, which means you can charge a laptop.
We've hired from Wrenbury and Anderton and the standard of the boats and the service from both yards has been excellent.
Only issue last year was realising on the first evening that we had no kettle. After a quick phonecall the next morning, they arranged for us to collect one as we passed their next base. When we got there an hour later they were watching for us from one of the moored boats and handed over the kettle as we slowly cruised by!0
