Have to agree that it's bit shocking if it is an extra £500 per cat in an unfurnished house!

Why would you not let a cat in? In case it knocks a wall down?

We rent, we have cats, our house is still standing. If you don't want people to 'live' in your rental property maybe you're in the wrong game?

Thanks for your comment but what you do not seem to understand is that it is not a game! it's a business arrangement.

I can actually choose who lives in any house/flat I own, we can set the rules together if they are prepared to agree to the first set that I have set.

Renters have an absolute choice, if they don't like me or the home I am letting they go elsewhere, the same happens with me.

If I can't find the right person then the house will be empty until I do, no mortgages, few outgoings, so I wait until I find the right tenants for my homes. My homes are well cared for, warm, well decorated, my tenants appreciate this.

I am not asking for it all my way but nor should a tenant. It's not a game!
  • We have two cats (Did have 3 but had to have the Mum pts 18 mnths ago) They do not cause any damage and spend most of their time asleep. We have never paid any extra deposit and I think we would not be keen to rent from a LL/LA that charged. On top of all the other LA charges it could take the property out of the budget of many.

On leaving our previous property we never had the carpets professionally cleaned, but I have a carpet shampooer and tend to do it often anyway. But as already said it is the kids that make more mess on the floors. Also our cats do not show any signs of having fleas (We have cream sofas so would soon know)

Looking on the brighter side. If someone has cats, the chances are they will be longer term tenants since they will not be wanting to move their moggy about too much. Also, unlike dogs who can join the family on many holidays, there is a good chance that someone will be calling by daily when the tenants are on holiday. Surely a good thing!

Yes, I would rent my house to families with cats. I know that they have sharp claws, have mad half hours and can spray but they also sleep for as long as possible and are lovely little animals to keep as pets.

I would have thought that human kidlets are the ones that have the potential for making more mess. I mean, crayons on the walls?!

Oh silly me, i was just searching online to see when the new 'rent a house' simulator was coming out on xbox

I just dont get why you would choose to go into business and turn customers away for no reason. Its like a gym turning people away as theyre fat and wont look right

A big deposit is not unreasonable.

When they shred furniture, how much is it to replace the lot ; the deposit won't allow full replacement, nor would insurance cover it, as it is only damaged, not put beyond use.

Who would like to rent a house with clawed furniture?
Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

I would rent to people who wanted to keep cats although I am slightly bias as I love cats! but cats make a home and ok its not ideal that my new sofa (well not so new anymore) has scratches and claw marks but the happiness my cat brings is worth it.

Thank you to all who have answered this, have decided to agree to cats (not kittens) no more than two at a time!

Hmm, that's a bit harsh. When our old cat died we were just going to get one kitten, but the rest would have made the final trip to the vet. So we took all 3. They had been trained by their mother cat by the time we got them (our girls couldn't wait to get them, but had to!) to use a litter tray. They always did use it. 3 cats no more problem than 2 really. though I do have to admit my Mother thought we were crazy! :rotfl:

This is all many years ago now, and it was our own home, not a rental. But please at least consider taking 3 cats as in our experience they weren't trouble. Sadly my Soot Cat was too exploring for his own good and was knocked down by car when he was only about 8 months old, so we were down to 2 cats then anyway.

Thank you for even considering taking cats into your rental property - so many landlords don't allow pets at all (maybe fish?) so it's really refreshing to hear of one that is happy to consider taking them.

    Best wishes from Liverpool!

The reason I posted here was to get some opinions on letting house to people who have cats or dogs as I have never had the request before.

When you are in business you have a choice of who your customers are, I have never had a problem getting renters and as this is the first time I have ever been asked about pets I posed the question.

Thank you for your input. I have always had great tenants and hope to continue to do so with or without cats!
