over 60's renting?

ok my mother sold her house that she had bought off the council in scotland and came down to live near us in lincolnshire, she rented a nice 2 bed house and lived off the proceeds of the sale while she looked for a job. She paid off her loan and other bills and doesnt have much left, her landlord wants to put upthe rent and she doesnt think she can afford it so is looking a 1 bed something. She was 60 last year and while her job is secure I'm worried about what she is going to live on when she retires.
can she get a housing association house/ council house? If we built an extention she could live with us, but she doesnt really like the idea as we live in the sticks. I'm really worried about how she is going to live and where she is going to live.

any suggestions?

With the new age discrimination laws, it may be that she can not be forced to retire and, if she chooses, can continue working happily for many years to come.

The UK is one of the last developed countries to finally recognize the need to protect our senior citizens from discrimination.
