hi
I want to paint cream my 2 pine bedside tables and (here's the biggie) my bannisters which are stained mahogany varnish...awful!
I need this to be a manageable project, not taking forever, as I am v busy.
If anyone has one this or has recomendations, I'd be very gateful. the end effect I'm loking for is a satin finish in cream.
thank you
clara;)

in an ideal world you can strip off the varnish and stain , then prime and use a satinwood , but this will take ages , however a company called bedec makes a multi surface paint available in gloss or satin , it's water based , easy to use and dries really quick , it's also really hard wearing ,

When we moved into our house the previous occupants had painted over the varnished bannisters. Nice
After 30 minutes of trying to sand the bannisters down, I decided to rip them out and fit new ones.
Once I had all the new bannister components, it only took 1 weekend to fit.0 -
Clean down surfaces with sugar soap, rinse and then use multi-surface primer before painting with the colour.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Not sure if there is another good way over varnish, but I just painted over a hardwood that had been stained.
Using normal primer the oil in the wood came through, so someone recommended 'aluminium wood primer' which I bought from Wickes. Excellent stuff and seems to have done the trick. Lovely white paintwork now!0 -

i was thinking maybe i'd have to replace them, but perhaps not...
