I've lost a years NCB - help!

Long story short - Have been looking at renewing my car insurance and have noticed that my current insurer (M&S) have me down as having 6 NCB - I passed my driving test Jan 2005 and have never claimed so should my NCB be 7 years now?

M&S are saying theres nothing they can do and that I've lost a years NCB - That if I want to try and gain it back I need to contact every insureer since 2005 (I dont even remember who I was insured with back then - I normally change company every year to the cheapest!) and they said even then they wouldnt accept it as its been so long! I'm not even sure whether the extra year will lower my car insurance?

I know it is my own stupid fault for not checking back then - I wont bore you with excuses it was purely my own stupidity.

Is there any way I can gain my NCB back before my renewel?! (Not due just yet thankfully!)

Thanks!

there is nothing you can do..it is a legal scam which insurers use..I am leaving Aviva in two weeks and they say they will only provide me with 5 years NCD proof...I joined them two years ago and I had 11 years NCD and i did not make any claims but I am going to lose 8 years. I know they say most companies will not lower your premium for any thing more than 5 years but the principle is if I am entitled to 13 years they should confirm that regardless to what effect that will have on the premium
  • I've never had an issue even though I've had insurers with a max of 5 years. I've now 13 years NCD (should be over 20 but it wouldn't make any difference).

With most companies it is normal to attain the maximum no claim discount after 5 years, so it shouldn't make much difference (if any) if your insurer only states you have 5 years NCD.

......... if I want to try and gain it back I need to contact every insureer since 2005 (I dont even remember who I was insured with back then ......

    Start saving your insurance paperwork!

A third party has 6 years to submit a damage claim against you, and were a valid claim to turn up years after the event, you would personally be liable to pay if you couldn't trace the relevant insurer to deal with it for you.

(In the case of injury to a minor, then they have up to their 18th birthday to claim against you!)

Ask your insurer to confirm in writing:

    (a) The amount of NCD that you provided them with at the inception of the policy 12 months ago.
    (b) That you have not made any claims on the policy.

Which insurance company are you with so I can avoid them? If you're with a broker, who is the underwriter?

This is what I've been told now by my sisters friend (He works for a broker) - Its rubbish!! Oh well nothing I can do :(

I do now - I was young and naive (and stupid!) - I'm now grown up, still a little naive, probably still stupid lol (Thanks for the info though!)

Thanks for the replies everyone :j

As others have said, you should keep the documents fom previous insures who inform you how many years no claims you have.

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago whereby effectively i was loosing 5yrs NCD. As I had all the previous documents stating how much NCD I had built up i passed this onto my new insurers who acknowedged that I have 12yrs NCD at the start of the new insurance period.

If you can remeber your previous insures it might be worth getting in touch with them and asking if they can send you proof of how many years NCD you had at that time. You might be lucky in that you only need to contact you last insurer

I can't understand why they would want or need previous policy details back to 2005.

When I change insurers, my last schedule/proposal is always enough to verify NCD entitlement.

How did you verify your no claims entitlement with M & S?

I know they say most companies will not lower your premium for any thing more than 5 years
The second lowest quote I had this year was based on 14 years ncb. The same quote was not avaliable with 5 years ncb.
