  • Well surely this is due to the very low interest rates that many people now have on their mortgage deals. And this won't last forever.

If you follow further in that post, I questined the expenditure.
The discussion has then moved on to highlight that there is circa 36% of relatively non essential spending that could be reallocated to higher level priorities i.e. food, light, heating and shelter.

Everything seems so completely black/white/statistical with you.

So, you move funding from motoring to light.

Woohoo!! You can't go to work for a couple of days as you have used the petrol money. Fantastic.

Do you not see the problem with your everso blanket statements?

    Graham,
Do try to follow threads properly.
It seems you just want to argue without reading the thread context

I clearly showed my personal priority list and said that there was an opportunity from clothing down the prioritiy list resulting in a potential 36.4% of funding that the budget could be allocated from.

    I didn't include motoring.

If that's a low priority for you, then fine.
I would suggest that other factors may be lower in prioirity.
    Very Good.
Now, forgetting about the percentages for a second, what would most people priorities lie in order of necessities

    For me: -
    Food......118
    Housing...238
    Fuel and light...42
Household services..63 (Not sure what this is for given Fuel and Light are above)
    Motoring...137
    Clothing and footwear..44
    Leisure goods.....36
    Leisure services..64
    Catering...47
Fares & other travel..20 (Motoring is above)
    Household goods..65
    Alcohol.....60
    Tobacco...28

Taking clothing downwards, that's 36.4% that could be reallocated to higher priority on the list.

    Sweet baby Jesus!

Seems to me that there is one realistic option for the masses of (non-existent) mortgage holders on the edge facing a (non-existent) rise in mortgage rates.

Decide whether the mortgage is a priority and if it is reduce spending in other areas to compensate. Mortgage goes up by £100; therefore £100 needs to be found - there is no choice.

If someone has managed to create a budget that saves £100 in petrol money but means that they have to take 2 days a week off work because they haven't got the petrol I'd suggest that they might have IQ issues or, just maybe, are being deliberately obtuse.

What Homer Simpson's financial adviser suggested when his finances were under pressure was to "earn more money - you're too stupid to budget".
