heatwise
hi
i have found out that my gas central heated property is fitted with a heatwise meter!
in december we had a combi boiler installed & the emersion removed.
on supplying eon with meter readings we were contacted to verify reads as the heatwise readings had not changed.
explained that we had combi boiler & have always had gas central heating so account has been updated.
would like to know how we can now change tariffs without having to pay out for a new meter as we now or never had really benefited from heatwise due to be gas heated.

Hi bezrez
Heatwise meters are specifically designed for all electric properties with storage heaters. They allow 10 hours of cheaper rate electricity for heating and water heating purposes during each 24 hour period.
As you've had gas central heating installed, I can see why you feel this type of set up is not beneficial.
Due to the specialist nature of Heatwise, we only have the one product available for this type of meter. Therefore, the meter will need to be changed to a more conventional type before you can take advantage of the wider choice of tariffs available, both with us and the other suppliers.
I'm afraid, we currently charge £51.06 to change a meter.
Sorry can't offer anything more positive bezrez but hope this is of interest.

Hi
Many thanks for your reply but i have not had gas central heating installed only a combi boiler instead of a heat only gas boiler.
the property has always had gas central heating from new (1996) it was a heat only gas boiler & emersion for the water.
my query is that if heatwise is designed for electric heated properties why was this type of meter put in in the first place when gas central heating was in place???
we have not benefitted from this type of meter being in place since moving in (1997) as the property was NOT storage heaters.
surely eon would have installed the meter originally & if so did not check that the meter was suitable for the heating system in place.
I feel that it is unfair to expect us to pay to have a meter changed from one that was not designed for the property in the first place!
Surely now we have a combi boiler & the meter is not moving on the heatwise part of the meter we should be able to have access to a more economical rate than the one we have had (wrongly) for the last 15years.0 -
Have you used the immersion heater to heat water using electricity at the cheaper heatwise tariff in the past?
What have your historic kWh usages been on an annual basis on each of the rates that you have been charged? What are they now?
You might find that you haven't been much worse off at all if your water has been heated using cheap rates.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

the emersion was wired to the meter...no inside timer just came on when the meter told it to...so yes i would have benefitted from that.
still doesn't answer the question though of why that type of meter was installed.. surely it should have been a normal economy 7 meter & not a heatwise one having gas central heating installed.
now to change to a new supplier or a cheaper tariff we have to pay to have the meter changed!0 -
Yes but that was a question for 1996. It's way too late to complain about it now. Even if it was an E7 meter and you heated water at the night rate you would have benefited from lower night rates and still would have to pay £50+ to change it to a standard meter now.
Why did your boiler not heat the water as well as the central heating? I have a "heat only" boiler and there is a connection to the hot water cylinder to heat up the cylinder.
Have you ever since 1997 compared and switched tariffs? You would have found it would have been near impossible to compare and switch with a heatwise meter and would have resolved it much earlier. Comparing and switching regularly provides the best savings.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

Hi bezrez
The Heatwise meter would have been fitted at the request of the builder/developer of the property.
Consequently, we usually charge to change them as the decision to install them in the first place wasn't ours but those designing and building the property in question.
Sorry this is negative berez but hope it helps explain why we charge to replace meters.
