How would I clean this?

Moving into first property and cleaning the kitchen - LITERALLY from top to bottom.

On top of the cupboards there is about a foot of space between the ceiling and cupboard top.

There is really sticky, dusty, greasy dirt on the top of the cupboard. I tried wiping but it is too sticky and built up. It's like tar or glue it's that bad.

What's the best way to clean it, what products work well with something like that?

Just use a bleach/washing up liquid mix, it should work.
But a real grease monster is Flash For Floors, I use it on my cooker hood :)

When you've done it, line the top with some leftover wallpaper or some greaseproof paper so you can change it when it gets dirty.

Scrape it off with a wallpaper scraper and then you'll only need to clean what gets left behind.

Turps cleans grease I used it on cooker hood and also top of Fridge Freezer, cuts through grease you must wipe down afterwards with detergent

Washing soda in very hot water plus a green scrubby thing with washing up liquid on and a cloth to mop it up. Alternative cleaner is sugar soap.

I had exactly the same when we moved into this house years ago. I used a wallpaper scraper to scrape the think gunk off the top of the cupboards and sugar soap to clean the residue. It's amazing what a disgusting state some people let their kitchens get into though isn't it.

Another vote for a scraper then sugar soap. Once you get the cupboard tops clean cover them with sheets of newspaper (which can't be seen from below) and can be scrapped and replaced, saving a repeat job. ;)
