Iphone help

Have just downloaded the latest version of itunes to my computer after an upgrade. I found all my husband's old songs for him on our external hard drive and put them back in the library for him. He's put his iphone in and it's charging but it's not recognising it as a device, with it not coming up on the side as Mr minty's iphone. So he can't put any new music on as it won't synch. Anyone got any ideas as to where he could be going wrong?

It's all working now thanks. It was my security software that was causing the problem.0
